Fiber Optic Dressing Monitors Wound Healing

A team of Swiss researchers from the Technology in Textiles (TechinTex) project are working on a new type of wound dressing which can monitor the state of a wound using fiber optic threads woven into the dressing. The fibers are designed to change color in response to changes in the acidity of the wound, which is an indicator of its healing status.

It is hoped that this new approach may replace the need for swabs and laboratory testing.

Currently the dressing is capable of detecting acidity changes in human blood serum, but may include enzyme monitoring in the future. The team is currently working on calibrating the light signal through a range of acidity levels. Such smart sensing dressings may offer a powerful new resource for the treatment of recalcitrant wounds such as diabetic, pressure and venous leg ulcers in the future.

Why do I need OTDR Launch Fiber?

Picture
Picture
  • OTDR Launch Fiber is also known as " OTDR Dead Zone Eliminator" or "Dummy Spool Fiber"
  • It is designed to assist in testing of fiber optics cable in using an OTDR.
  • The OTDR Launch Fiber is  to help minimize the effect of the  OTDR Launch pulse on measurement uncertainty or called dead zone area.
Picture
  • All OTDRs have a “dead zone”  that may extend a hundred meters from the OTDR in which accurate readings are unavailable.
  • OTDR simply could not detect or locate faults or analyzed fiber optic under test within the dead zone region.
  • To overcome this problem, a launch fiber is used to eliminate the dead zone thus giving the accurate measurement and readings of fiber optics link test.

  • The preferable length of launch fiber optic is in the range between 500 meter - 2000 meters.
  • As seen in the above diagram,  the launch fiber optics eliminates the dead zone region thus giving the OTDR true graphical presentation and measurement of fiber optic cable under test

  1. Fiber Optics Monitoring System monitors online fiber optics integrity against theft and fiber cuts or damage due to ongoing site construction.
  2. The fiber optics monitoring system allows end-user to minimize network faulty downtime by sending rectify maintenance team to the exact faulty locations thus lowering operating cost and maintenance downtime period.
  3. One unused fiber optics core or dark fiber  is used to connect to the fiber optics monitoring system on both end.
  4. Main features of fiber optics monitoring system are :-
  •    Real time detection of faults
  •     Real time exact  fault location detection
  •     Alarm with GPS map notification capability via SMS or 24hours  monitoring         control center.
  •     Improve quality of service
  •     Avoid loss of revenue due to interruption of service
  •     Avoid penalties
  •     Ensure network service level agreements
  •     Enable preventive maintenance

I have been in the field of fiber optics since early 1990s.  I gained fiber optics skills and knowledge via my working experience as end-user, main contractor and sub-contractor and finally as an optical fiber enterpreneur.
