Picture
This is a relatively good fiber optics outdoor jointing closures installation.
The jointing closure is mounted to the telephone pole with proper mounting bracket designed for pole installation.

Let us take a look at others outdoor fiber optics jointing installation.
By looking at these photos  one might come to the conclusion that lack of  Attitudes, Skills and Knowledge contributed to these bad installations !!

A short video from Discovery Channel explains briefly how fiber optics is made.  It is quite fascinating to see how silica is processed and designed to enable high speed data, video and voice to be transmitted all over the world in just mere seconds..

Isoprophyl Alcohol

Picture
Isoprophyl alcohol is used extensively in fiber optics to get rid of dirt, dust and other contaminants during the the termination or jointing of fiber optics cable.
Isopropyl alcohol is a skin irritant. It should be kept away from heat and open flame.
Poisoning can occur from ingestion, inhalation, or absorption. Therefore it is highly recommended to use isoprophyl alcohool in a well-ventilated areas.
Smoking and eating are both strictly a big NO..

What is Fiber Optics ?

What is Fiber Optics ?
Picture

Basically, fiber optics is made from glass and contains 3 main structures.
a. Core
b. Cladding

c. Buffer

Picture
Light travels inside the fiber optics core..

Picture
The cladding causes light to be confined to the core of the fiber by total internal reflection at the boundary between the two due to differences in refractive index between fiber core and cladding.
The cladding refractive index (n1) is lower than fiber core refractive index (n2)

The buffer is basically made from plastic to provide addtional protection to both fiber optics and cladding.

During the process of splicing or jointing fiber optics, the buffer which is of size 250micron will be removed. This process is called stripping.

Fiber Optics - Color Blind Test

10/15/2013

If you are a color blind person, it would be most  difficult for you and your team to do fiber optics fusion splicing or termination in sequence.

Why ?
Picture
Because fiber optics has 12 color coded as per  TIA/EIA 598-A. The color coded in sequence is :-

1   Blue
2   Orange
3   Green
4   Brown
5   Gray
6   White
7   Red
8   Black
9   Yellow
10  Purple
11  Rose
12  Aqua

If you have a normal color vision, you will be able to see 73.
If you are colorblind you will have difficulty to see 73.

I have been in the field of fiber optics since early 1990s.  I gained fiber optics skills and knowledge via my working experience as end-user, main contractor and sub-contractor and finally as an optical fiber enterpreneur.
